Hazel, Frank, and Percy end up in Hazel's old house in Alaska. Percy notices the romantic tension and thinks that they definitely need to get together. After Frank gives her his firewood, they share a closeness Hazel never had with Sammy, likely making it easier for her to accept her feelings for him. She feels conflicted, as her death and sudden separation from Sammy left lingering feelings, even though he is long dead. Hazel has other blackouts on this trip where she relives times with her old boyfriend from the 1930s, Sammy Valdez. Hazel is honored by Frank's trust in her and accepts, though she is nervous about carrying something so important. Frank tells her about his life being tied to a piece of firewood and asks her to carry it for him, calling Hazel his best friend. Frank witnesses her judgement and the two sit together in the Fields of Asphodel. On their journey to Alaska, Hazel shares one of her blackouts with Frank, taking him back to her time in the Underworld. Frank also already likes Hazel in Son of Neptune, wanting to protect her since she is so much shorter than him, but also greatly respects her, knowing she's a good fighter and doesn't need his protection. She feels that she is at Camp Jupiter to redeem herself as a hero and doesn't want to get caught up in relationships, but still develops feelings for Frank. When they meet up again, Hazel's heart "preforms a little skip-beat tap-dance" that irritates her. They split up while Hazel takes Percy to see Reyna and Frank goes to the armory. When Percy Jackson arrives at Camp Jupiter, Frank and Hazel are standing guard by the entrance. They bond over this, but people still make fun of them and say they're 'perfect for each other' since they're both losers in the eyes of the legioneers. They remain happily together for the rest of the series and both become Praetors Frank in House of Hades and Hazel in Trials of Apollo.įrank and Hazel are both in the Fifth Cohort, effectively making both of them outcasts. Hazel and Frank are good friends in The Son of Neptune and both secretly have feelings for each other.
